Growing Herbs

I have fallen in love with growing herbs in the garden. One of the first things I tell people when talking about gardening is, “If I couldn’t have a big garden, I would still find a way to grow herbs.” It’s absolutely true, too. From the flavors they add to foods, to the health benefits and cost savings herbs are definitely a favorite of mine to have in the kitchen garden!

Most herbs are easy to grow from seed and if they are perennial herbs you plant them once and have herbs for many seasons!

The herbs that have served me time & again and have been absolutely worth my time and investment have been perennial herbs.

My favorite Perennial herbs:

Sage

Thyme

Rosemary

Oregano

Lavender

Lavender hyssop

drying some of my garden supply of sage and thyme

My top tips for growing herbs:

Start easy

No need to overwhelm yourself as you begin growing something new! Pick the herbs that you use the most and start there.

Maintain

Herbs don’t really take a lot of time or maintenance but that doesn’t mean you can completely ignore them either! Regular pruning is a must for most herbs. Avoid risk of transferring any diseases and be sure to use clean pruning scissors.

Morning harvest

Harvest after the morning dew (you don't want to harvest wet herbs!) Morning time is when the herbs have the most flavor and will preserve easier.

If you aren’t looking to start a large garden or kitchen garden, I hope you pick a few herbs to grow in planters and find the same joy in growing fresh herbs that I have.

Happy growing <3
